Chapter 19

“You have got to be fucking kidding me,” I said aloud.

I picked up my cell phone and called Rexford. “I did something monumentally stupid,” I said the moment he picked up.

“Hello to you, too, Margo.” I could hear the playful eye roll in his voice. “What did you do?”

“When will you be here?” I asked.

“I’m already on the way,” he said. I could hear a car honking in the background.

“I have a beer waiting for you,” I informed him.

“You know me so well, Margo,” he said. “I’m here. See you in a few. Hi, Sam.”

“Good evening, Mr. Montgomery,” I heard. “Here to see Ms. Davis?”

I hung up the phone, so I didn’t hear the rest of the conversation if there was any. I went to the freezer and pulled out the IPA and stout. The stout I put in the fridge for later. I opened the cabinet above the sink and took out a pint glass. As I poured the beer into the glass, I heard the key turn in the door.

“Honey, I’m home,” Rexford called into the apartment, shutting the door behind him. I could hear the cat jump from the couch and run over to Rexford.

“Are you talking to me or the cat?”

“The cat, of course, because she’s such a good girl. Yes, you are,” he said in a voice reserved for speaking to children and animals. I could picture her rubbing the length of her body against his leg. Cat loved Rexford. The feeling was mutual. “Good girl,” I could hear Rexford say again to Cat. I knew he would bend down to pet her as I always did.

“I’m in the kitchen pouring you a beer!” I called to him.

Rexford appeared in the doorway of the kitchen, arm outstretched for the beer. “Where have you been all my life?” he said, talking to the beer, not me. I laughed as he leaned in and kissed the pint glass before raising it to his lips and taking a deep drink. “God, I love me some Bodega 99,” he said, smacking his lips.

“They have the best beer around,” I agreed.

“You said it,” Rexford said, taking another deep pull of the amber liquid. “So, what did you do that was so terrible?”

“Let’s go to the couch, shall we?”

“That serious, huh?”

“I’ve been on my feet all day and don’t feel like standing around in the kitchen.”

Rexford shrugged and walked to the living room. Seconds after we sat down, Cat jumped into Rexford’s lap and curled into a ball. She began to purr as he stroked her head gently. I sat beside him and turned so my back was pressed against his chest. He removed his hand from the cat and rested his left arm across my stomach, leaving his right hand free to continue drinking his beer.

I rested my arm on his and twirled his arm hair around with my fingers. We sat like that for a moment, neither of us speaking. I pressed myself further into his body, accidentally hitting Cat in the face as I did so.
